TREKKING  BY CAMEL, HORSE OR DONKEY

GALLERY

The Bedouin way of life depends very much on camels and donkeys. Horses are nowadays more kept for pleasure and status.

Camel riding is the most ancient and original way of moving through the desert. With the camel the Bedouin travel over long distances. This animal is perfectly adapted to the harshness of this kind of environment. The "gift of Allah" as the Bedouins call it, is more than a simple transportation facility. The camel is considered a companion within the hard life of the Bedouin.

Donkeys are used by the Bedouin in their day-to-day activities as getting water, carrying utensils when herding goats, or getting firewood, as well as for travelling to nearby areas.

Arabian horses were bred to be war horses with speed, endurance, soundness, and intelligence. Because many raids required stealth, mares were preferred over stallions as they were quieter, and therefore would not give away the position of the fighters. The desert environment required a domesticated horse to cooperate with humans to survive. Horses need far more water than camels in order to survive (most horses can only live about 72 hours without water). In the past in situations without pasture or water, the Bedouin fed their horses dates and camel's milk.

Riding a camel, horse or donkey is indeed something very special. The way you experience the desert is very different than driving through it by car. As you move almost soundless and relatively slow, you observe the landscape intensively providing more time to experience and understand this fascinating environment.

Our Trekkings cover different tracks in the area Hurghada till Shalatin through colorful scenic landscapes. The daily amount of riding comes up to four to five hours. Each participant of the safari has his own riding camel, horse or donkey. The riding is split in a morning and an afternoon part. Lunch will be taken along the route. There will be a car with us for transport of supplies and luggage which we will meet at the different sites for night camp.
